PI Matías Dodel Presentation at the 2nd International Forum of Sociology Association

Principal Investigator Matías Dodel (Uruguay) participated at the Second International Forum of Sociology Association (ISA), which took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 3 August, 2012. ISA is considered the largest association of Sociology in the world.

ISA`s World congresses and Forums can be characterized as some of the largest and diverse academics meeting of sociologists from all over the world. Within the Forum, Matías presented his findings on the panel “Digital Citizenship, e-democracy and e-competence in contemporary societies” coordinated by Research Committee 14, Sociology of Communication, Knowledge and Culture. The panel, which featured speakers from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Spain and Uruguay, was the only one within the theme of the Information Society conducted entirely in Spanish.

Matías presented the progress of his SIRCA II project entitled “ICT and Welfare Policies: Digital Skills’ Impact on Formal Education and Labour Market Trajectories of Young Uruguayans Evaluated by PISA 2003” where he proposed the need of a common theoretical framework for conceptualising the impact of ICT in various dimensions of welfare/development. He specifically addresses the necessity of conceptualisation of multidimensional and hierarchical digital divide with at least 4 levels (access, use, appropriation and results), of which the latter should be operationalised on the dependent variable or dimension in which we study the impact ICT.
