Profile:

Dr. Arul Chib is Director of Singapore internet Research Center (SiRC) and also Associate Professor of Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological University. Dr. Chib examines the impact of development campaigns delivered via a range of innovative information and communication technologies. The theoretical deliberation explicates the mechanisms underlying the process of effects. The analysis bridges multiple levels of analysis—technology-mediated effects at the individual level and socially-mediated effects at the structural level. Programmatically, Dr. Chib pursues action-oriented research with marginalized communities, in varied cross-cultural and socio-economic contexts. His research examines multimedia games with reproductive health content for teens in the barrios of Lima, Peru, and mobile-phone solutions for rural midwives based in tsunami-affected communities of Aceh, Indonesia. In India, he studies multimedia education for rural children, village knowledge centres, and GPS navigation tools for fishermen. His other projects include a South American study on wireless Internet, and an entertainment-education HIV/AIDS project in Namibia.
