ICTs and Empowerment among New Generation Migrant Workers in China

Dr. Baohua Zhou is an associate professor at the Journalism School, Fudan University, Shanghai of China. He is also a research fellow of the Center for Information and Communication Studies and associate director of Media and Public Opinion Research Centre (FMORC) at Fudan University. He ever studied at School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University of Singapore as an exchange graduate student in 2002. His research focuses on new media, migrant workers, public opinion and media effects. Since 2008, he has kept working on ICTs and new generation migrant workers in Yangtze River Delta of China. His other research projects include social differentiation, media use, opinion expression and political participation in China, media use and identity of new migrants in Shanghai, Web 2.0 and public opinion in China, among others. His works have appeared in Asian Journal of Communication (SSCI), Chinese Journal of Communication (SSCI), Communication & Society, and various major journals in the field of communication in China.

| Abstract | This project will systematically examine the relationship between ICTs and new generation migrant workers in Yangtze River Delta of China with first-hand empirical study. Besides mapping the adoption and usage of ICTs among migrant workers, we will especially analyze the empowerment role of ICTs for them and explicate the complex mechanism in this process.
